Kutztown Lions Club Newsletter
September, 2011
My fellow Lions, I would like to extend my appreciation to all Lions who worked the fair stand for both
the Festival and the Kutztown Fair. We had more than 40 Lions and related others work the stand
multiple shifts for each Fair or Festival. By my estimates over 3 tons of potatoes were sacrificed on
our behalf. That is the equivalent of about 3 bags per helper. I have not gotten an opportunity to do
some equivalencies on sausage sandwiches, burgers or hot dogs.
In addition we had some firsts this year in the stand. Lion Pete gave birth to a bouncing kidney stone.
Lion Dave Walker took one for the team and ended up being hospitalized (only for a very short time,
thank God). Lion Barney and Lion Merritt represented the octogenarians of the club, Barney putting
together the fries trays and Merritt working 5 shifts. When I grow up I want to be just like you guys.
Your efforts make being a Lion mean something special. Lion Bob Mack is now certified on window
work, grill and fryer. Lion Dave Patterson broke a cardinal rule of stand work by working the stand on
his birthday (you fellow Lions with birthdays in the winter don’t have to sweat this).
Finally I would like to give a BIG Lion THANK YOU to Lion Karen for all of her behind the scenes work
and her efforts to keep the stand stocked and staffed.
After all this work I can say without reservation, I am proud to be a LION.
Lion President Bob
So how did we do? The final profit from the food stand is not yet available as all of the bills have not
been received. Lion Smoke will let us know as soon as he knows.
New Member We welcome into the club Lion Michele Boyer. She has already proven to be a great
asset to the club, having worked several shifts at the Festival & the Fair. Address: 927 Krumsville
Rd., Kutztown. Phone: 610-683-5032. Please be sure to make her feel welcome. Thank you Lion
Dave P. for sponsoring her.
Important upcoming program We are honored to have Congressman Jim Gerlach as the speaker for
our Sept.1 dinner meeting. Let’s make sure we have a good turnout for what should be an interesting
& informative meeting. Feel free to invite family & friends to hear Congressman Jim. We should have
guest Lions from other clubs as well as we are hosting a zone meeting after our meeting.
DG Phil‘s Visit DG Phil honored us with his presence at our steak fry. The district challenge this year
is to plant 500 trees, as clubs or individuals. Please let us know if you plant any trees & look for
opportunities for the club. We are also challenged to engage our youth in a Lion activity & to help
relieve hunger. If you have any ideas for these projects, please discuss them with Pres. Bob.
New Fundraiser! We are selling tickets for a daily number raffle for the month of October. Tickets
cost $5 each. Please see Lion Don Bercaw for your tickets. At $5, this should be an easy sell. We
should be able to make a lot of money.
DUES are DUE! Please pay your $50 annual dues to Lion Smoke by the end of September.
Lion Honored At our picnic meeting we honored Lion Neal Zimmerman for his many contributions to
the Club by naming him a Melvin Jones Fellow. Thank you Neal all for the many ways you have
served our club & the community.
Lion Opportunity We are looking for a Lion to represent our club with Geoff Brace & KCP & to attend
advisory board meetings. If you would be interested in this position, please tell Pres. Bob.
Lion to Lion Lion Jim Schlegel received some tough news & will begin treatments for cancer of the
esophagus. Lion Earl continues to receive chemo treatments. Lion Jay L. is back home again after
rehab. Please keep these Lions in your thoughts & prayers. Cards & visits are always appreciated.
A Clean Sweep! Brooms are back! We are once again selling brooms at a cost of $12. If you know
of anyone who wants one, please see Lion Smoke.
Programs! Get your programs! Lion Don B. as 3rd VP & his committee are responsible for lining up
programs for our meetings. If you have any suggestions, please pass them along to Lion Don.
